Health Innovation Centre

Health Innovation Centre

University of Lancaster – Construction Value - £41M

This landmark building will be utilised as an ‘innovation hub’ and also the new home for Lancaster Universities Medical School and Division of Health Research.

The facility which was completed in September 2020 incorporates a wide variety of uses including lecture theatres, research space, teaching classrooms, offices and an open-plan business lounge.

Futureserv carried out the MEP Technical Design for the building and further developed this through to a Construction level of detail ready for installation. In addition, Futureserv were responsible for carrying out the TM52 Thermal Comfort Analysis to allow a significant proportion of the facility to be naturally ventilation thereby minimising energy use.

The primary heat source for the building is provided via the University district heating network which was assessed to facilitate further extension to future project phases.

A particular challenge for this project was developing a strategy to conceal high level services as most internal rooms featured exposed soffits with decorative suspended lighting rafts. A solution was achieved by routing of services within the raised access above, with penetrations through the floor slab coordinated using 3D Revit.

Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine (IDRM)

Institute of Developmental and Regenerative Medicine (IDRM)

University of Oxford – Construction Value - £23.5M

Futureserv have completed the MEP design to support the construction of a specialist, world-leading Institute of Development & Regenerative Medicine (IDRM) medical research in Oxford.

The 64,583sq ft three-storey development includes extensive laboratory and write-up spaces for cardiology, neurology, and immunology. The building contains state-of-the-art research facilities, notably in advanced bioimaging, along with a café, seminar room and exhibition space in the auditorium for events.

The MEP design was completed entirely using 3D Revit software to achieve a high level of coordination between services and the building structure and to provide a level of detail suitable for Construction.

New Barrow Campus

New Barrow Campus

University of Cumbria – Construction Value - £10M

The facility, which is situated at the end of Buccleuch Dock Road will cater for 1,400no. students at a new University of Cumbria campus on Barrow Island along with an additional 300no. places at an expanded and upgraded facility at Furness College’s Rating Lane site.

Creating a full university presence in Barrow that attracts and retains talented graduates with high-level skills is vital for the area and set to expand further in areas such as advanced manufacturing, business, computing, education, and health.

The Learning Quarter also includes a ‘skills hub’ at an upgraded facility at Furness College’s Rating Lane campus.

Futureserv were appointed to develop the MEP design for this striking building and delivered a RIBA Stage 4 coordinated design and will provide technical support and monitoring on behalf of the Client during construction.

Yoko Ono Lennon Centre

Yoko Ono Lennon Centre

University of Liverpool – Construction Value £21M

The new state-of the-art cultural landmark for Liverpool located on the corner of Grove Street and Oxford Street, named in honour of Yoko Ono Lennon, an Honorary graduate of the University (Hon LLD 2001), campaign ambassador and long-standing philanthropic supporter.

The University of Liverpool’s new £22m Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, opened in March 2022 offering students a world-class teaching experience. Futureserv’s role consisted of the full mechanical and electrical building services design including, Lighting, Small Power, Lightning Protection, ICT, and Security & Fire Alarm designs.

Futureserv was also heavily involved in Client, Stakeholder and design team meetings from project inception to project completion.

Buttermere Building

Buttermere Building

Runshaw College – Construction Value - £3.5M

Futureserv were appointed to carry out the Technical Design of all MEP solutions for this new-build, BREEAM ‘Very Good’ project. The two-storey building complete with 12no. classrooms offers a range of facilities that will create an exceptional student experience and will be home to the Professional Engineering School, including both ‘T’ Levels in Design and Civil Engineering.

Futureserv also carried out BB101 environmental modelling of the building to maximise the use of natural ventilation while creating a comfortable environmental within the teaching areas. The building exceeded the Building Regulations and local planning policies following incorporation of the proposed services strategy and with our ‘Fabric First’ approach for the thermal envelope of the building.

The building services strategy comprises of electric Air Source Heat Pumps to serve the LTHW underfloor heating system complete with roof mounted photovoltaics panels. Daylight linking and extensive use of lighting controls further reduces energy use by the high efficiency LED lighting employed throughout the facility. The building was constructed with suspended architectural ceiling ‘rafts’ incorporating lighting to help create visually stimulating environment and maximise room heights.

Newton Building ICZ Extension

University of Salford - Construction Value - £11M

The project features a striking architectural design and will be known as the Engineering Showcase Building. The new facility features high quality exhibition space for the display of engineering solutions, research/demonstration areas and an open-plan collaborative learning environment.

Other features within the building include a 'Maker Space' equipped with 3D printers to allow staff, pupils and external organisations to share knowledge.

The M&E services include an induced natural ventilation system (mixed mode), photovoltaic roof mounted system, LED lighting complete with full automatic controls and daylight dimming.

Keele University - International Study & Dorothy Hodgkin Buildings

Keele University - International Study & Dorothy Hodgkin Buildings

Keele University, M&E Value - £0.5M

The international study demand at Keele University has been increasing on an annual basis. To cater for this requirement, Keele University instructed Futureserv to provide MEP design and contract administration for their new International Study Centre.

The project needed to comply with the University policy to minimise Carbon Emissions whilst meeting the high environmental standards required within the various teaching spaces.

The Dorothy Hodgkins Lecture Theatre at Keele University had a history of poor air quality and overheating due to legacy plant and constraints on the existing building services generally.

The Facilities and Estates Directorate instructed Futureserv to devise a method of improving the internal environmental conditions whilst still maintaining low energy consumption.

The projects were completed successfully during 2012 and 2013.

Cheadle Hulme School, - Manchester

Horwood Energy Centre

Horwood Energy Centre

Keele University, Construction Value - £1.6M

Futureserv collaborated with Keele University to provide mechanical & electrical consultancy services to support major plant replacement in the Horwood boiler house and energy centre.

Existing heating plant catered for approximately 700 rooms and a wide selection of administration, retail and support areas. The existing boilers were relatively inefficient and subject to frequent downtime.

Commercial efficiency of the upgrade was essential and therefore a technical feasibility study was carried by Futureserv to evaluate options and establish the optimum solution. The study concluded that the introduction of CHP (combined heating & power) to be the most sustainable solution to suit the campus’s requirements, in conjunction with new high-efficiency gas condensing boilers.
